The Dr. Brown bottles were recommended to me by a friend with a special needs child who had done a lot of research. And I must say he was right. Even with the extra parts (which are necessary for the vacuum-less bottle design), I haven't had any problems with the bottles. No leaks, cleanup is easy, and our baby (our second) took right to them.
I will say one thing: You really need a dishwasher and the dishwasher basket to wash these effortlessly. Otherwise there are a bunch of parts to keep track of. Also, you should rinse the bottles after use. Milk is hard to clean off anything after it has dried.
I have been very happy with these and can recommend them wholeheartedly.

I have an absolutely perfect baby and I have Dr. Brown to thank! These bottles are great. My 6 month old has never had a gas problem unlike my other 2 kids, they were terrible. Clean up may take a couple of minutes extra with all the pieces but well worth it. I usually rinse them out just after feeding time and then cleaning is a breeze. I would recommend these to any new mother.
Best buy for breastfed babies

I recently purchased the BreastFlow by First Years for my 3 wk son. He seemed to drink pretty well from them, but the flow was too fast and the nipples seem to collapse. It was kind of a pain to squeeze the nipple to get the milk back into the bottle.
My friends told me about the Dr. Brown bottles and showed me the nipple flow. I bought some based on my friends recommendation and have fell in love with the bottles. My son drinks slower, has less gas, and does not spit up as much. I would highly recommend these bottles to anyone who breastfeeds and pumps, or breast and formula feed. My son did not realize he was full for 10-15 minutes after using the BreastFlow bottles, with the Dr. Brown's (because of the slower flow nipples that simulate the actual breast flow speed) my son realizes he is full soon after his feeding.
Definately worth the money, wish I would have known about the differences in the compared products nipple flow and I wouldn't have wasted my money on the BreastFlow bottles.
The only downside to the Dr. Brown bottles is that it is more time consuming to wash the bottles because of the extra pieces, but that is minor compared to the satisfaction my son receives from each feeding due to the nipple flow and decreased air intake.

These bottles definitely help to reduce colic. The thing I love the most about them is the fact they are BPA free. It is nice to know you aren't putting unnecessary chemicals in your baby's body.
These bottles are great because my son had such bad colic he was screaming when he would eat. The vent system in these bottles virtual eliminates any air from getting to your baby's tummy. The only downfall to these bottles is they are a little more labor intensive to wash and put together. You have one or two more pieces to put together over regular bottles. However, if your baby has any amount of colic it is definitely worth the extra few minutes of assembly for their tummy's sake.
One thing to note is at one point they began making these bottles with the ounce markers marked as raised, clear numbers. This made is EXTREMELY difficult to see how full you were filling up the bottle. However, I have since bought some and the markers on them are blue, making it much easier to read the ounces you are making. It is not that big of a deal unless you're doing a 2:30 am feeding and trying to fill the bottle up without being able to see the markings.
Overall, these are the best bottles on the market. They truly do help eliminate colic and keep your baby safe and out of harmful chemicals way like BPA.
I tried others, this is the best
Reviewed by: Cheryl Hill, Review Date: 2009-09-24
Having had a colicy first child, I chose to try the Dr. Brown's bottles in additional to several other types & brands. I've ended up storing all the others and using the Dr. Brown's exclusively.
After reading countless reviews, I've bought and tried several other types/brands. All bottles other than the Dr. Browns created suction. The nipples would collapse, resulting in leaks and a frustrated, gassy baby. I would have to remove the bottle from his mouth to get the air (and bubbles)to go back into the bottle so he could start sucking again. The gas in his belly would last hours-making him uncomfortable and disrupting his sleep. (equals tired, cranky Mommy)
The Dr. Brown's were the only bottles that I didn't have that problem with. My son is able to feed continuously and comfortably with a consistent flow and no air bubbles. Our feedings are cleaner, relaxing, and more comfortable.
Other reviews have sited a "con" as having more bottle parts to wash. I thought that would be tedious, but gave the Dr. Brown's a try anyway. Thus far, it has NOT been an issue. ANY bottle you use will have atleast 3 parts to wash (bottle, collar, nip) the Dr. Brown's have an additional 2 parts (resevoir tube, valve). I am happy to spend an extra minute at the sink, rather than countless hours with a fussy baby. The trade-off is a no brainer.
The ONLY issue that I've had with the Dr. Brown's is that the stage 1 nips still flowed too fast for my newborn. I am using the Playtex Air Vent Stage 1 nips instead. I have not tried the Br. Brown' premie nips, but suspect they'd work just as well. FYI-the Dr. Brown's are slightly taller than other bottles when they have the cap on. Keep that in mind if you're buying a bottle cooler for travel.
Skip the smaller 4oz bottles and go for all 8oz. Buy a soft bottle brush that won't scratch the plastic bottles. Again, I've tried several, but like the Avent brush with travel case. It seems soft, will last and doesn't spray me with water ever time I remove it from the bottle.
Amazon seems to have the best price on Dr. Brown's.

my husband and i tried a few bpa-free bottles: gerber nuk, avent (omg the price!), playtex ventaire, etc. Dr. Brown's really helped with not swallowing air. one thing I do recommend is if you were to buy many of the dr. brown's, to buy all the same type, i.e. purchase all bpa-free ones, or all bpa & pthalate free ones. I recommend only doing the 8oz bottles. My husband and I noticed though the straws and collars/various pieces were "the same", it seemed the tolerances between the pieces (even between the 4oz and 8oz bottles) would occasionally cause it to slightly leak or not vent air properly. It's hard not to mix and match when washing when the pieces look the same. we still recommend these bottles to friends and love them as they do work and the little one is happier.

After our son was born we used the inexpensive bottles without all the parts to clean because we were going through so many bottles every day. Our son was a very easy baby, but he was a bit fussy every evening for a few hours no matter what we tried. I thought we would give these bottles a try since people told me that babies who are fussy only in the evenings may have gas. After 24 hours of using these bottles he was never fussy in the evenings again! It was amazing! We immediately went out and bought another dozen of these bottles and we'll never use anything else! Our baby is so happy now. Also, these bottles are not hard to clean. I simply put all of the parts in the dishwasher in a little plastic box for bottle parts (Munchkin brand, $3 at Target) and place the inner chamber of the bottle on the dishwasher 'posts'. I did not buy the Dr. Brown's dishwasher piece for the parts.
Try these bottles - you will not be disappointed!

Yes, easy to use and clean. I know it has several parts but if you wash it right after the baby finished her bottle, you simply can rinse it in a warm/hot water and it's clean! If you don't wash it right away it's ok, use some warm/hot water, soap (I buy Planet or other mild soaps) and there are 3 holes in the vent part, brush them with a small brush 1-2 times.. is really easy especially after you do it a couple of times.
The bottle is pretty thick but light. It seems strong and durable.
Baby drinks with no interrupts. I like the natural flow feature of this bottle. If you use just nipple and bottle of other brand with no vent, it creates vacuum and your baby often stops many many times. I did not like that as she got tired faster and never finished her bottle and had to snack more often...
The nipple is soft and it is standard. I like that it is soft breast like (so many other nipple seem so thick). We talked to 3 lactation consultants and they recommended Playtex Drop Ins (wide neck bottles) or in our case, our baby would only drink from Standard nipple/bottle, they always recommended Dr. Browns. So if these are the only 2 bottles I will buy for my children.
I tried every bottle and nipple out there except Avent and Born Free (our lactation consultants really did not recommend them); mixed different bottles with nipples, inserted vent from Dr. Browns into different bottle when they didn't have the safe bottles yet and I was very happy to see these new Dr. browns bottles that are safe for my child.
And one more thing. When we used OTHER bottles they were somewhat hard to wash. Bottles inside would be sticky and we had to brush them for a long time and rinse really well before they felt clean. I never had this problem with Dr. Browns bottles.

I've tried Platex, born free, and Avent bottles and I like the Avent ones the best. I wish Born Free had a better (less fussy) venting system and thicker nipples (they tend to collapse easily). I wish Platex had a better venting system such that you could warm the bottle in water and expect the venting system to work. It doesn't all the time and is not very convenient. The ink marking on the platex bottle indicating the volumes (oz and ml) came off after the first washing so I can't know how much is in the bottle. I've tried to replace the markings with a VWR lab marker (water and alcohol proof - pretty heavy duty marker) and these also come off. It makes me question what is in the plastic. The bottles have also recently started to take on a sour smell (after 1 month of use). Ultimately I have been most happy with the Avent bottles. They are BPA free, venting works great, not fussy, durable, good quality nipples, and they have stood the test of time well. Very good value overall.
Leaks? Here's how to stop them.

If you have leaks with this bottle, you can stop them easily: Pull the nipple through the collar half-way and stop pulling. Then PUSH the nipple through from the back, making sure it seats evenly all around. It will snap into place. Easy!
You'll be tempted to pull the nipple through the collar and then screw the bottle together. Heck, doing so is instinctive. It will also practically guarantee that the nipple doesn't seal against the collar, and the bottle will leak.
These bottles work well and they're easy to clean. The venting works. They're BPA-free.

As Michelle from Denver points out, there is a knack...most people don't read the manufacturers instructions because they're thinking 'what could be so hard about using a baby bottle...?' We've been using Avent bottles for over 13 years (8 children) and thankfully my husband DID read the 'tiny print' instructions.
What Michelle says is right - make sure the teat is fitting snugly, whatever you do DON'T OVERTIGHTEN (otherwise you'll cause a vacuum effect - that's when the bottles leak), there should be a 'nitch' on the white part of the screw top piece, line this up with your baby's nose, you should hear a whistling sound as the milk flows out and is replaced by air. I hope this helps.

We have used the Avent bottles for 6 months now and we are completely satisfied with them. The bottles are well made and easy to clean. The nipples are available in different flow rates from very slow to very fast so you can meet the needs of your baby as he grows. The wide base of the nipple is great compared to most bottle designs and is really helpful if you are using the bottles with a baby that is breast feeding.
Several reviews mention leaks. If you wet the inside of the nipple before you screw it on the bottle (as the instructions state) you will have no problems. In six months I have had a bottle leak maybe 3 or 4 times and simply screwing it back on solved the problem.
I would highly recommend this product and would purchase it again.
You get two 4oz. bottles and two 8 oz. bottles, a formula container (which is cute but useless at this point) and a bottle brush (also cute but doesn't work for cleaning the breastpump parts), but on the other hand it is good value if you consider that you get the nipples and the bottle rings as well. My baby is two and a half months and I only use the 4 oz. bottles Philips Avent BPA Free Breast Milk Storage Set with Philips Avent Silicone Nipples, 2 Pack. I gave it five stars for value.
Update:
With this set you get the newborn nipples (mentioned above) which are good until you baby can handle the Philips Avent Slow Flow Nipple which are the nipples my baby uses since he was three months old (he start refusing the bottle when the newborn nipples were to slow for him). I will start using the formula container as a regular container (it has a removable divider that makes three separated spaces inside) when my baby starts eating solid food, so the value of this set is worth more than 5 stars!

The drop-ins (both ring and sleeve) are nice but the nipples are very slow. There's nothing really wrong with them but just not for us. Now the Vent-Aire is a different story. Too many parts, leaks and they don't vent where they're supposed to. Avent on the other hand vent properly, DON'T LEAK and will feed the baby as quickly as humanly possible. This last point sold it for us. Imagine a 3am feeding which would you rather have: a drop-in model that take FOREVER to feed, a leaky bottle that vents improperly or one that will feed your lazy eater in less than 30 minutes (15 in most cases)? It's a win-win situation. You can get you and your baby back to bed faster and completely satisfied.

Breastflow is the only feeding system that requires both suction and compression, just like breastfeeding. The nipple is designed to mimic the breast so baby can latch on and to encourage the same mouth and tongue position as breastfeeding. The double-nipple system requires both suction and compression, just like breastfeeding and baby controls the flow of milk. It's the bottle most like breastfeeding.
The Breastflow System is ideal for nursing moms who would like to introduce a bottle, are returning to work, or need to supplement while their baby is in day care or with a caregiver. Because Breastflow bottles so closely mimic the feel and action of breastfeeding, care givers can bottle feed baby while Mom is working and Mom can still continue to breastfeed.

two 5oz bottles
two 9oz bottles
two Breastflow slow flow nipples
two Breastflow medium flow nipples

I've purchased 2 bpa-free starter sets already and have just purchased another! My son had refused to latch-on since he was primarily bottle-fed while we were in the hospital (I was running a fever for a few days and didn't breastfeed consistently). I tried these when we initially came home but he didn't like them (maybe because using these were more work than the Evenflo nipples we got from the lactation consultant) so I stopped trying. Then after he turned a month old, I decided to try them again since my son was still not breastfeeding and I wasn't ready to give up. This time he was more willing to try the nipples and we started using the stage 1 nipples with the 5-oz bottles exclusively. I'm happy to say now that my son is now breastfeeding easily with every feeding (although I still have to supplement with formula).
One of the reasons I'm buying another starter kit is that I was sterilizing two of the 5-oz bottles in the microwave and unfortunately I had put an eyedropper in the sterilizer and when the top melted, it melted against two of the bottles and ruined them (they melted at the point of contact). So I need to replace the 5-oz bottles and I figured it couldn't hurt to have more of the 9-oz bottles so decided to buy another starter kit vs just three more 5-oz bottles.
Yes, because of the non-standard wide mouth size, I have to transfer my pumped breastmilk from Medela storage bottles because I can't attach these bottles to the Medela Freestyle pump that I use, but I like the wide mouth - it's great for adding in scoops of formula easily in the middle of the night.
I also like the little storage container that comes with the starter kit - I'd buy them if they were sold individually (but haven't found anywhere that I can buy them alone). They're really convenient for storing individual servings of formula and they snap onto the bottoms of bottles. The fact that the sides are flexible mean you can squeeze the container to form a sort of pour spout when adding the formula to the water in the bottle.
All in all, I'm really happy that I purchased these although they are pricey comparatively speaking. I think it's well worth the cost though!

We first bought the Sassy Mam bottles and were pretty happy with those, but while those helped with our little one in terms of gulping air, she did need to stop every so often to spit up, because the flow was too fast even with the slow flow nipples. We bought these bottles because my wife was also attempting to breastfeed, and while that didn't work out, we like these bottles better than the Sassy Mams. Our little one can control the rate at which she feeds, and we don't need to stop for spit ups, or need to burp excessively after a whole bottle. I also like how even though the nipples are two pieces, the bottles as a whole are easier to clean than the Sassy Mams. We discovered that leaks are a problem if you feed, then attempt to refill the same bottle with more formula, as the formula that gets trapped between the nipples drains out between the cap and the bottle when unscrewed. Once we figured out to drain the nipples using the release tabs, then rinse the nipples before recapping to get the original seal, leaks have not been an issue. Overall we are seriously considering buying more bottles as our little one gets bigger.

I have tried just about every bottle on the market, hoping to find one that my breastfeeding baby would accept. Finally, I happened upon this one. I love it, and so does my son! The vent system keeps the baby from having to let go of the nipple every so often to keep it from collapsing. And no matter what, this bottle doesn't leak! Furthermore, I really like knowing that there are no chemicals leaching from the plastic into my baby's milk. And my son likes the nipple much better than the firmer Avent nipple. A great product!
When I first tried these out I had my doubts that they would work out okay (I had been using Avent and have used Dr Brown in the past). They take a little more time to put together than the Avent and babies don't like to wait when they're hungry! However once I got a system down (I put the two vent pieces together and the nipple/collar/cap together in advance and store them in separate bins where I prepare the bottles) I came to really like them. I instantly got less burps than with the Avent and the Dr Brown and they don't leak like the Avent.
They've gone through the drop test onto a hardwood floor just fine and they quickly passed the most important test: my son took to them right away. He seems to find the shape easy enough to hold now and then. I also like that the caps are easier to center on the nipple than the Avent.
One warning: I tried out the "6 month+ Y Flow" nipples but my son vetoed them instantly. I unwisely had bought a number of nipples which (for now) he won't use. I get a little use out them with my two year old who takes the occasional bottle.
Other than that I'm sold - a better bottle than what I had been using (minus a little ramp time getting used to them) and of course they are BPA free.

I was searching for a bottle that didn't leak (all of my Avent and Breast Flow leaked terribly). These bottles are fantastic - as long as you figure out the venting trick (it's so silly that they just don't tell you this). The "venting system" has a little, rubbery insert that goes under the nipple and protrudes into the bottle. this protuberance as an air venting slit that keeps the nipple from collapsing. this slit needs to be facing towards the ceiling when you are feeding baby. I'm guessing it's because the air your baby is causing isn't forceful enough to really push the bubbles out- but if you let the bubbles RISE, as they do naturally, you will see a continuous stream of bubbles popping up inside the bottle as your baby drinks. it's really no big deal. when i make a bottle, i always make sure this little slit is situated where the words on the bottle are. if you don't place the slit anywhere particular, you can always twist the bottle while baby is drinking - you will eventually see bubbles.
my little girl is a voracious eater. she will take down an entire 9 oz bottle without coming off the nipple once- as long as that slit is where it's supposed to be. these bottles DO NO LEAK (i have three i bought at separate times). It's so ridiculous that no one tells you to twist the bottle if it's not venting. fantastic product- if you don't mind the price.

We have used these bottles since our daughter was born due to the fact that they don't contain Bisphenol-A (BPA). They are fantastic bottles.
Here's a tip. You can use the Dr. Brown nipples with them as they are the same... and much cheaper (good for when you need to move to stage 2 and 3).

I was so relieved to find these bottles since they don't contain the BPA like almost every other bottle on the market. My baby does very well with them--hardly any gas, hardly any interruptions during feeding--they are fantastic. WORTH EVERY CENT.

Good System But Requires Extra Effort
Reviewed by: R. Braun, Chicago, IL USA Review Date: 2010-01-04
My wife and I tried several different types of bottles before settling on the Dr. Brown's wide-mouth. The Dr. Brown's bottles use the best system for reducing the build-up of vacuum pressure (and thus bubbles) in the bottle and we feel like they significantly reduced our baby's gas. However, the bottles consist of several extra pieces that require extra cleaning with special brushes, so over the long-run we have probably spent a lot more time cleaning bottles than we would have if we had purchased more conventional type bottles. In our case we think the extra time is worth it.
Good starter bottle set

This is a really good bottle set and adequate for an infant. I did not gives it a 5-star because i personally find them huge. Don't get why they can't make smaller bottles for infants - the bottle looks huge compared to my baby's head and is double the size of the max ounces it holds. My 3 month old is at the point where she wants to hold her own bottle but this bottle does not facilitate that.
Overall, I have no complains about milk flow, material of construction and the fact that it reduces my baby swallowing air while drinking so I still do recommend it
love it but replacement parts hard to find

LOVE LOVE LOVE these bottles. Like the standard Dr. Brown's bottles, they do take some time to clean compared to other regular bottles, but it's not that much longer and it's all for the baby. =) Some pluses -- bottles are easy to hold for my baby because they have a curvature to them so she knows where to grasp. Also, since they are wider, they don't topple over as easy.
The only real downside is that since these aren't the standard sized Dr. Brown's bottles, I can't seem to find replacement parts for them. So that's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I've already lost/misplaced a couple of the travel discs and bottle caps but they don't seem to sell these separately (unlike the standard ones -- I see these on Amazon and in some stores like Babies R Us). If anyone knows where I can get wide neck bottle replacement parts, please let me know!
And oh, just a tip, if you love Dr. Brown's bottles, you should also get the Dr. Brown's mixing pitcher. It's so easy to make her formula with it and no clumps and since you're not shaking the bottle, hardly any bubbles at all!

I had been exclusively breastfeeding my baby and wanted to introduce a bottle during one nighttime feeding so my husband could help. Our pediatrician said it would be okay to start the bottle when she was 3 weeks old. So I used my medela advanced breastpump to pump milk and then my husband would feed our baby girl the pumped milk using the medela bottles we purchased to go along with the pump. She ate from these bottles fine but to my horrow slowly started to have problems latching on! Finally we realised it must be the bottles and stopped using them. We were prepared to buy whatever bottles we could find that wouldn't cause nipple confusion as the medela ones had. After a couple days of getting her to latch on again we tried the Dr. Brown's wide-neck natural flow since we had received these as a shower gift and after I read a few reviews online about them not causing nipple confusion. I think they actually helped IMPROVE her breastfeeding suck and latch on, which for a young (3 week old) breastfeeding baby is VERY important! She feeds stronger and remains feeding for a full feeding every time even after using the bottle for a feeding. I may never use another bottle! These are fantastic!! I hope this review helps Any nursing mothers out there ready to introduce a bottle but not give up on nursing. These bottles are wonderful!

I decided to try Dr. Brown's bottles with my baby since my previous baby had gas issues. For the first 5 months my baby did have gas and I had to use gas drops.(I believe its because I use powder formula. The country I'm living in only has powder. My first 2 babies used concentrated formula & had no gas.) If I hadn't used Dr. Brown's however her gas would have been worse. I know this because at 4 months, when I needed to change the nipples, I opted to change to another popular brand. (Because I live overseas I would have had to order them on-line and wait.) With the new bottles her gas became worse. I decided to order them and I'm glad I did because when I started using them there was definetly an improvement Now at 6 months she is gas free, but only because I;m using these bottles! I recommend these bottles to everyone!

We have used Dr. Brown's bottles and nipples since our first daughter was born, for about 5 years.
We would not trade them for anything else. Our kids rarely have gas or colic, and rarely spit-up, even though all 3 have reflux. These bottles are the main reason, in our opinion. Likewise with the nipples. And now the bottles are safer to use, as they are offered in glass and/or bpa-free plastic versions. They are a little pricey, but well worth the investment. We would not trade our Dr. Brown's sets for anything else on the market.
Baby's Best Friend

To say that I absolutely love these bottles would be an understatement. After much research and trying out other bottles that failed miserably, I took the plunge and invested in this product. I was apprehensive after a manager from a famous baby store discouraged me from purchasing them stating that the bottles were a hassle because there were so many parts to clean. It is true that there are a couple of extra parts but cleaning and sanitizing them is a no brainer and not anymore effort than a regular bottle. As other reviewers encouraged, I read through and followed the directions. As a result, I have never ever experienced even the slightest hint of a leak - even from the very first feed. Which simply means, don't attach any of the parts until after the bottle has been heated and is ready to be fed to your baby. Of course the best and most important benefit is the comfort it provides my baby's tummy. The last time I fed my daughter with a standard bottle, she was struggling with discomfort from the amount of air that was stressing her poor little tummy. With these delightful bottles, she is so relaxed, her body is not tense and she can peacefully drink her meal without having to constantly stop to be burped. These bottles are magnificent! I'm sorry that I didn't purchase them sooner. Also the wide neck is a dream. No more powdered formula on the counter.

I didnt believe by changing bottles my daughter would be spitting up less and less gassy but these bottlesprovided me with just that. She does not take in as much gas as she did with traditional bottles and so does not have those expolosive burps that would sometimes result in her throwing up.
Very happy i have changed to these and i just ordered 3 more. I would say, give them a try and see for yourself.

I have purchased different kinds of straw cups for my 17-month-old baby and can honestly say this is the best!!!
My main concern before I bought this cup was the weight of this cup. My little was used to have cups with handles so I wasn't sure if she had a strong grip enough to handle this cup. As you see, the cup seems to be very heavy!! However, this cup is not as heavy as it looks( a bit heavier than my computer mouse.) And its insulator works like a charm!!! I think it keeps milk/juice cold for at least 6 hours. At last, it doesn't leak for most time. Only time she spills her drink out of this cup is when she holds this cup up side down and shakes it hard.
I'm very pleased with this product and own 5 of them now. My little girl loves this cup as well!!!
So here is my 5 stars!!
cheaper than buying milk while out
Reviewed by: grace, Houston TX USA Review Date: 2010-07-10
We have the plastic clear ones for water and got this for milk. I like this design better than a lot of straw sippy cups b/c the straw does not "flip out" and spray you when you open it. This cup is reasonably well insulated -- we put milk in it in the morning, and our son will drink it at church/Sunday school. It seems to stay pretty cold. It also has survived a number of drops without cracking, which I've observed is a problem with some of these "poppy" cups (as my son calls them). I think the plastic is less brittle than some other designs.
You have to make sure to get the straw installed correctly (pull it out to wash and reinstall just as you're closing it up, and make sure it is nice and flat on the inside / underside of the cover), but as long as that's been done, we haven't had issues with leaks.... except when my son turns it upside down, with the lid open... then the air hole will leak. I don't think that is a design flaw... just giving fair warning!
Leak-proof and keeps liquids cold
Reviewed by: Mom in CT, Review Date: 2010-08-11
I got this container to keep my son's milk cold while he is at day care since they do not have a refrigerator. It does a great job of keeping liquids cool, and when the cap is screwed on properly, it has never ever leaked. I was worried that it would be heavy for my 14-month old to hold, but is is very lightweight. Also the outside does not get very cold to the touch when it is filled with a cold liquid (another worry I had pre-purchase).
Within minutes of the first use, my son threw it on the floor and the open lid came off. However, it wasn't broken and easily popped back in. I think it may actually be designed to pop off easily so that it does NOT break. I will say it has been through dozens more tosses (my son is in that phase!) and has not separated again.
One thing that DOES separate is the base of the straw from the cap. I will try explain this. When you open the top cap of the bottle, you see the blue screw top with a clear silicone straw sticking up through a triangular hole in the screw top. The straw is actually connected on the other side of the screw top to a larger, round piece of silicone which is the size of the bottle. Where the straw meets this round piece is a triangular silicone base which fits the straw to the hole in the blue cap. So, it's all one piece: straw to triangular base to flat round piece. And that's what creates the seal to prevent liquid from spilling out.
There are two issues with this design: First, the triangular piece can sometimes push BACKWARDS through the hole in the blue cap which means that the seal preventing liquid from coming through is no longer 100%. When this happens, liquid can leak out of the base hole that the straw comes through. The second issue is that it makes the straw difficult to clean because the part where the child sucks is on an angle down to the round piece. From there it "turns" to come straight down to connect to the actual straw inside the bottle. So, the mouthpiece is like an angled "L" shape (and, of course, has a very small opening) - there's nothing you can really fit inside to clean it, so you just have to run soapy water through it and hope that does the job. It doesn't do the job for thicker liquids (like a smoothie), and I have found myself digging in with a Q-tip.
However, I would give this bottle top marks for generally not leaking, keeping liquids cool and being very easy for a child to use. Plus, the stainless steel inside and wide mouth make it exceptionally easy to clean the interior. I clean it by hand as that works best, but it does well in the top rack of a dishwasher, too. Would recommend.

Also, pediatrics recommends straw after 13 months... This bottle has everything. My son is 2 years old and this bottle is always in our stroller.
Great sippy, wish the flip top wasn't so wonky
Reviewed by: C. Freel, Las Vegas Review Date: 2010-04-14
My sons adore this sippy and fight over who gets it in the car. Two problems with it - relatively minor, but annoying - it is harder to clean well because of the rubber seal gasket that holds it together and the flip top is hard to close and pinches the boys' fingers occasionally when they close it wrong. That's more a function of four year old clumsiness, but you can latch it closed with a finger in the way, as evidenced by my son's blood blister, so I just wish the flip top was removable.
